Return to the challenges of the project
Cycle gallery, rehabilitation of the car park and multimodal access are part of the qualification of the Esplanade Comédie which aims to restore its splendor to the heart of the Metropolis. The cycle gallery, recognized as unique in France by CNESOR (the National Commission for the Evaluation of the Safety of Road Works), will offer cyclists the opportunity to connect the Comédie sector to Antigone in just 2 minutes, from the second half of 2025.
It will make it easy to cross the city center by bike and provide surface safety for pedestrians on the emblematic square of Montpellier. Located in the heart of the cycle ring, the gallery will connect with various Montpellier cycle lines and will be accompanied by a “mobility hub” on level -1 of the Comédie car park, in which cyclists and motorized two-wheelers will have their place and will be invited to park in numbers, in complete safety.
Thanks to the access to avenue Frédéric Mistral, a real rebalancing will be proposed for the benefit of the quality of life in the city center as well as a notable improvement of the cycle network as a whole and in particular the operation of the ring bike.
The cycle gallery will be connected:
- to the North via a development of the Citadel alley at the Place du 11 Novembre 1918 (Corum),
- to the South, to Grand Saint-Jean, via Victor Hugo and Anatole France.
Ultimately, the Comédie cycle gallery will have direct access to cycle lines 1, 2 and 6 of the Métropole and will be connected to the cycle ring allowing it to also connect to cycle lines 4, 5 and 10.
Thus, the project is part of the mobility strategy driven by the Metropolis and guarantees security and fluidity for people on bicycles: it will now be possible to travel between Boulevard Victor Hugo and Avenue Frédéric Mistral without setting foot on the ground.
The commissioning of the Comédie cycle gallery is planned for the second half of 2025.
