Metro Service Resumes After Danube Tunnel Incident

Subway 2 stopped running on Thursday, after a quarter past eight during the morning rush hour. THE BKK Info according to its website, the problem was caused by vehicle failure. Shortly after 10 a.m., BKK informed that subway 2 had been restored.

The problem was solved by bus replacement on the entire line, which did not affect the Batthyány tér station in either direction, nor the Kossuth tér station towards Örs vezér tere.

According to our information, the train full of passengers stopped for almost forty minutes between the Batthyány tér and Kossuth Lajos tér stops. People could not be let off the vehicle for a long time. We understand that people were calm and there was no panic.

Firefighters arrived from the direction of Kossuth tér around 7:50 a.m. and began evacuating the passengers from the tunnel.

We also shared photos and videos of people escaping.

The disaster management told MTI that there was smoke at the Deák tér stop of the metro line 2, so the firefighters are escorting the passengers out of the station. They added that a fuse had failed, for which the professional firefighters from the capital were dispatched.

We also contacted the Budapest Transport Center regarding what happened.

“There was a power failure on the morning of November 28 on the M2 metro line. According to current information, the problem was caused by a faulty switch cabinet. At the scene, experts from the BKV and the fire department are investigating the circumstances of the incident. Instead of the M2 subway, a replacement bus runs on the entire line. There were no personal injuries,” the BKK reported to the Index.

They added that the unexpected, immediate replacement of the entire subway line requires serious resources, so it is also necessary to reassign buses from other lines. Because of what happened, “the removal of one vehicle from the line may cause minor inconvenience to the passengers.”

Gergely Karácsony: An electrical short is a problem

On his social media page, the mayor gave information about the stoppage of subway 2 on Thursday morning.

According to our current knowledge, the electrical blackout at the Deák tér station is causing problems for subway 2. Colleagues are working to eliminate the error, provide replacement buses and provide appropriate passenger information

Gergely Karácsony explained in his Facebook post.

The mayor thanked the Metropolitan Disaster Management, adding that they are trying to restore safe traffic as soon as possible.
