“There is still time to reflect” the implications of disappearing Inai: Alcalá

Mexico City. The president commissioner of the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (Inai), Adrián Alcalá Méndez, assured this Thursday that after the deputies generally approved the opinion that seeks to eliminate the organization, “there is still time to reflect” and called on legislators to consider the guarantee model that the Mexican State must provide to protect the rights of access to information and protection of personal data.

When participating in a forum organized by Inai, he stressed that, although the ruling is moving towards the Senate and local legislatures, it is time to analyze the implications of this structural change.

“Many ask us what will happen to the rights of access to information and protection of personal data. Today we do not have clear answers, but we know that we must work together to issue secondary regulations that will be crucial to define the future of these rights” , he stated.

During his speech, he highlighted that there is uncertainty about the future of the National Transparency Platform and the possible mechanisms to guarantee access to information in the event that the Inai is eliminated. Likewise, he recognized the challenges and mistakes that institutions face, but emphasized the valuable work carried out over the years to build and strengthen the guarantee and protection of the rights protected by the Inai.

“This is not about defending four commissioners or a building; it is about protecting an institution that has been key to guaranteeing essential rights. We have to be agents of change and adapt to continue improving,” he said.

Alcalá Méndez reiterated Inai’s commitment to continue working until the last moment and keep the doors of the institution open, and invited all those involved to continue contributing from their respective areas. “The future may be an opportunity to improve, but it requires the joint effort of all of us,” he concluded.
