In Mexico there are six million 58 thousand 548 establishments, of which four out of five belong to the commerce and services sectors, where the former has shown greater growth in the last decade, revealed the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .
After presenting the most recent update of the National Statistical Directory of Economic Units (DENUE) Interactive 11/2024, Inegi reported that of the more than six million establishments in the country, 44 percent belong to the commerce sector; 42 percent to services; 11 percent to manufacturing industries and 3 percent to other sectors.
This new version of the DENUE, which contains updated data on practically all establishments in the country, detailed that the state of Mexico concentrates 13.4 percent of the total establishments, with 817 thousand 94; Mexico City, 7.5 percent, with 458,231; and Puebla, 6.6 percent, with 405 thousand 792.
The entities with the lowest number of establishments are Baja California Sur, with 41,237; Colima and Campeche, with 41,612 and 46,923, respectively.
Inegi explained that in the first edition of the DENUE of 2010, it was observed that of the 4 million 331 thousand 202 establishments, whose information was published at that time, the highest percentage corresponded to the commerce and services sectors. “From 2010 to date, this trend persists in the version presented, although there is an increase of 5 percent in commerce and a decrease of 5 percent in services.
It should be remembered that like every five years, with the completion of the 2024 Economic Censuses, the DENUE was completely updated and contains all the establishments in the country, Inegi stated in its publication this Tuesday.
When comparing the figures by sector of economic activity between the previous version of the DENUE (from May 2024) and the current one, an increase of 1 percent was observed in the services sector and a decrease of 1 percent in other sectors.
The directory, described by Inegi, is an easily accessible tool that informs the location, economic activity and size – based on the stratum of employed personnel – of all active establishments, throughout the national territory. In the DENUE there are both large, medium, small and micro establishments, from all sectors of activity (with the exception of agriculture).
