Outstanding athletes from the Duarte province are recognized

The Sports Union of the Duarte province (Udeprodu), developed the gala ceremony to present awards to the most outstanding athletes in 2023.

The activity took place in the rooms of the San Francisco de Macorís Teachers’ Club, where plaques were awarded to the two best athletes by sporting discipline.

The recognized athletes were: in chess, Jennisis Santos and Eliandres Díaz; in athletics, Anderson José Cueto and José Miguel Guzmán; in basketball, Anyi Massiel Santana and Luismal Ferreiras; in handball, Arianny Gómez and Brailin Paredes; while, in baseball, Ricky Aracena and in boxing, Bernardo Ortiz and Wilson Paulino.

Also Lisbette Betances and Wilton Cruz, winners in cycling; in dominoes, José Santiago and posthumously, Miguel Ángel Salazar (who died two days before the athlete of the year gala); Also in fencing, Yolaini Mejía and Michael Taveras were the best; in soccer, Jazmine Bonilla and Fraylin Díaz; In gymnastics the best were Dannierys Gómez and Wilfry Contreras; Ana Smerlyn Rosa and Medickson del Orbe in Judo, in Karate Luis Ventura and Pontio Rafael Landrón, Naryelis López and Jahangel Quezada in the korbal discipline.

The Peasant League chose Franklin Santos and Adeuris Núñez as athletes of the year; Jazmín Veras and Bladimir Brito in fight; in softball Darianny Burgos and Oscar Genao, while in tennis Jhonatan Castillo; archery Perla Figueroa and Albert Peralta, as the winners and in volleyball Nallelin Taveras and Edward Eustate were awarded.

In the majestic event, a plaque of recognition was presented to the Boxing Association, for being elected the association of the year, for the multiple achievements achieved, the distinction being received by its president Víctor de Jesús and director Orlando Paulino, while the judoka Medickson of the World, was chosen as the best among all Duartista athletes.

The ceremony was headed by Professor William Hernández, president of Udeprodu, Sonia María, northeast regional director of sports; Martín Pantaleón regional director of industry and commerce; Reynaldo Martínez past president of the Sports Union; Angélica Cruz and Juan Francisco Estévez, directors of Udeprodu and Omar Santos, president of the Mirabal Sisters Sports Union,

Also Jesús Ovalle, vice president of the Sports Union of the Sánchez Ramírez province; Leidy Germán, national technical director of the Dominican Judo Federation; Sergeant Major Sierra, school police supervisor; José Augusto Morel, renowned coach and Liliana Abreu, representing her brother Noel Abreu.

The event began with the notes of the national anthem and later the regional director of Sports Sonia María made the invocation to the Almighty.

The welcoming words were given by the leader of UDEPRODU, Angélica Cruz, while Professor William Hernández, president of the entity, spoke the central words and who thanked everyone present for the great work they do, some as leaders and coaches and others as athletes who forge discipline and honesty in society.

The ceremony had special recognition to José Augusto Morel, one of the most brilliant coaches in the Dominican Republic, and Mayor Noel Abreu, who excused himself from being in the national assembly of municipalities and was represented by his sister Liliana Abreu.

A minute of applause was held in memory of the athletes Ricardo Carty, Juan Leonel Grullón, Miguel Ángel Salazar and Don José Saleta, father of the athlete Guillermo Saleta, all of whom died recently.

The athlete of the year gala had the collaboration of the Dominican Federation of Sports Unions; the Duarte Savings and Loan Association; Agua María, Inmobiliaria Gabin, Siquió NG, Abraham Abukarma, economic canteens; construction company Conce, Telenord, the company that broadcast the gala; General Dr. Luis Elías Esmurdoc; the Hibi Radio station; Back Light Advertising, and the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP). The master of the ceremony was in charge of the journalist and announcer Odilis Hidalgo and the images were in charge of Orlando Roque, director of the SNTP.
