Environment, Brazil prepares for the ‘challenge’ with Trump – Latin America

The Brazilian government will try to maintain a “serious” and high-level dialogue with the future president of the United States, Donald Trump, even if it is foreseeable that there will not always be agreement between the countries, especially on environmental issues. Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said this during an interview on official government channels. “We are ready to maintain a serious, balanced and open dialogue, as we have always had with the United States. This year we celebrate 200 years of relations, which represent an adult and solid relationship. The United States is an important partner for Brazil. We will have talks, but our positions will not always coincide,” he said.

Of particular concern is the complexity of dialogue on issues such as climate change given that during his first term (2017-2021), Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement, while President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Pt) placed the environmental agenda at the center of his foreign policy. “The world has changed, and perhaps its assessment has also changed,” Vieira commented hopefully.

The minister also praised the recent visit to the Amazon by the current US president, Joe Biden, who in Manaus announced a contribution of 50 million dollars to the Amazon Fund. “I think there will ultimately be a consensus on the importance of preserving the environment. These are issues in the interest of all countries. We hope that commitment will be maintained by the next US government,” concluded Vieira.
