In the corona pandemic, the risk assessment was not downgraded at the beginning of 2022 on the orders of Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) – which the minister sees as justified in retrospect. As the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reported after joint research with WDR and NDR, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) wanted to downgrade the risk assessment from “very high” to “high” at the time.

However, after the media report, the minister informed the RKI that a downgrade of the risk assessment was “politically not desired” – even though the RKI and its then President Lothar Wieler had wanted this at the time. On February 25, the report said, the “reduction of the risk from very high to high was rejected by the BMG.”
Lauterbach wrote on Platform Therefore, the RKI and the Ministry of Health (BMG) rightly postponed the downgrade at the time.
