McDonald’s has recently been plagued by a series of problems providing popular options, from the temporary withdrawal of the popular Quarter Pounder burger due to gastroenteritis to the always broken ice cream machines.
Now customers looking to order an iced latte or cappuccino will be out of luck at some of the chain’s U.S. locations because espresso machines that make McCafé drinks are temporarily disabled due to a security issue.
Melitta, the maker of the $3,000 espresso machine, notified customers of a problem with the equipment, forcing McDonald’s to temporarily decommission them while the problem is resolved. The exact nature of the security issue was not disclosed.
McDonald’s customers cannot order espresso-based drinks, including macchiatos and Americanos
In a statement to CNN, Melitta said it has “recommended a temporary suspension of use for affected customers” while it investigates. “Our goal is to identify the root cause and provide a remediation plan that allows us to move forward,” a spokesperson said.
As a result, McDonald’s customers cannot order espresso-based drinks, including macchiatos and Americanos. However, iced and hot coffees are not affected and remain for sale, the fast food chain confirmed to CNN.
In scattered McDonald’s across the US
McDonald’s said it is still “determining the scope” of the issue, but it appears widespread. CNN sampled McDonald’s in random cities and found that the espresso-based drinks were not available to order in several cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Pittsburgh, New York and Tampa, Florida.
Coffee is a big part of McDonald’s business, with the chain selling nearly 8 million cups a day. The chain recently launched a spinoff restaurant called CosMc’s that focuses on specialty coffee drinks.
“One area of focus has been identifying ways for McDonald’s to participate in attractive and fast-growing categories … we’ve honed in on specialty beverages and coffee,” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempszynski previously said.
The shutdown couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the chain battles back after an E. coli outbreak that reduced sales and customer traffic. McDonald’s announced last week that it is spending $100 million on marketing and to help franchisees that have been hit hardest.
