The band Green Smatroll was in Filip Kaňkovský’s life before acting – Novinky

“I got to DAMU, I started studying acting and I had less time than before. As I was dragging the band organizationally, its activity weakened. An important aspect was also the fact that the ska style has lived in waves since its inception. After 2007 there was a crisis. We broke it with the album Rude Jazz, but then it completely collapsed,” says Kaňkovský.

“I remember that in the first half of the 2000s we played in the Prague club Futurum for eight hundred people as part of Easter Ska Fest together with domestic 2v1 and foreign stars Skalariak and in another Prague club Rock Café with only domestic bands for four. one hundred. But then suddenly only seventeen paying spectators came to the famous 007 club in Strahov to celebrate our birthday,” he continues.

At that time, the performances decreased, the band did not rehearse much, and although they released several singles for various compilations, they did not have material for their own album. However, according to Kaňkovský, the current times are good, interest in ska is slowly returning, so it is appropriate to release a new album.

“Our concerts are for a narrow circle of people. We need to find, capture and nurture every follower. For the genre to continue to grow, the bands only need to earn themselves,” he judges.

He admits that in recent years, people who have come to see him, an actor they know from films or the boards of the National Theater in Prague, have attended Green Småtroll performances. Of course, he would like them to go out because of the music, but he says that he cannot order anyone.

“I can’t tell people how to treat me. But I am always on stage, the musician and the one from theater and film careers. The guys from the band understand it, and if it should bring us a new audience, there’s nothing to solve,” says Kaňkovský.

At the same time, Green Småtroll also performed at theater events. They played at the opening of the season of the National Theater on Strelecky Island in Prague or at a concert in support of the Drama Club in Ústí nad Labem, with which Filip is very closely associated.

“It’s good for me when some older co-actors come to me and say they like our music. I’m very happy about that,” he said.

He always had an affinity for music, but he didn’t want to sing for a long time. He was going to dedicate himself directly to playing keyboards, but that would not be enough for his band.

“We were looking for someone to take on the role of front man. But we are such a special group that no one fits us. So I started sharing that role with others and then I got used to singing,” he admitted.

There are ten tracks in the new album Carousel of Pain. The band will perform live for the first time at the christening on November 28th in the Prague Futurum club.

“We will play the whole new album and the songs that are only heard at our birthday concerts. Real antiques will be rarely heard,” Kaňkovský concluded.
