Journalists eligible for the self-employed regime?

The deputy in the Assembly of People’s Representatives, Thabet El Abed, revealed, in a statement to Mosaïque FM on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, that a group of deputies presented an amendment to article 59 of the draft law of finance 2025; which amendment aims to extend the list of activities benefiting from the self-employed regime, to include the profession of journalist.

The main objective of this initiative concerning the self-employed regime is to enable individual workers, including journalists, to benefit from social coverage, to guarantee a better sense of stability and to facilitate the expansion of their economic activities.

Thabet El Abed specified that this proposal aims to integrate a sector with many individual workers, those in the media, who are often in a precarious situation and face difficulties in maintaining their activity.

The MP also stressed that the Ministry of Finance has shown its openness towards this amendment and is ready to approve it, which would constitute a major step forward for Tunisian journalists.

According to the PLF 2025, the independent contractor status is granted to any natural person who carries out an activity “only” in the industrial, agricultural, commercial, service, artisanal or trading sectors, provided that the activity generates a turnover of less than 75,000 dinars per year.
