The best restaurant in the world is on the Rhine: “Cheval Blanc” takes top spot

Star chef Peter Knogl’s restaurant achieved top spot in the “Top 1000 Restaurants 2025” category of the French “La Liste”.

The best restaurant in the world is located directly on the Rhine in downtown Basel. At least according to the renowned French “La Liste”. How “Gault Millau” announced on Tuesday that Peter Knogl achieved top spot with his “Cheval Blanc” in the Basel luxury hotel Les Trois Rois. With 99.50 points, his restaurant was voted number one in the “Top 1000 Restaurants 2025”.

“That’s not bad for our little place,” Knogl tells Gault-Millau. “Last year we were in second place on La Liste, this year we are number one. We can’t achieve anything more,” the chef is quoted as saying. The Bavarian native has long been part of the culinary elite: in 2011 and 2015 he was named “Gault-Millaus” Chef of the Year. Just a few weeks ago, the Michelin Guide awarded the “Cheval Blanc” three Michelin stars. The restaurant has been given top marks by the restaurant guide for around ten years.

Results are based on mathematical precision

“La Liste” – in contrast to “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” – is not based on the assessments of a jury, which does not even have to prove that it has actually visited the rated restaurants, as “Gault-Millau” reports. Instead, the ranking would use a sophisticated mathematical method to evaluate over 600 restaurant guides, culinary reviews, professional reviews and millions of online reviews from customers. These would include both traditional guides such as the Michelin Guide or Gault-Millau as well as Internet platforms such as Trip Advisor. (ala)
