[北京 ２７日 ロイター] – British newspaper the Financial Times (FT) reported on the 27th that Defense Minister Dong Jun is under investigation as part of a wide-ranging anti-corruption investigation into the highest ranks of the People’s Liberation Army.
The FT reported that several US officials, including former officials, said he was the third consecutive Chinese defense minister to be investigated on suspicion of corruption.
Reuters contacted China’s foreign and defense ministries for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
Dong, a former naval commander, was appointed defense minister in December 2023. His predecessor, Li Shangfu, was dismissed after seven months in office, and along with his predecessor , Wei Fenghe, had his party membership revoked by the Communist Party in June this year for “serious violations of discipline”.
China’s defense minister is responsible for military diplomacy, but Dong was not elected as a member of the military leadership, the Central Military Commission, at an important party meeting this year. When the decisions of the government staff were made in March, he was not appointed as a state adviser at the level of deputy prime minister, which was previously held by the Minister of Defense.
“The history of these investigations in the People’s Liberation Army is that once a thread of corruption is pulled, many other threads are thrown out and the jersey loses its shape,” said Dennis Wilder, senior -professor at Georgetown University Ta.
