Two US B-52 Stratofortress bombers were intercepted on Monday by two Russian Su-27 fighter jets near the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad in the Baltic Sea, a US official said.
US bombers took part in joint exercises with Finland, which shares a 1,340km border with Russia, amid escalating tensions over Western support for Ukraine.
Yesterday’s interception of US bombers by Russian fighter jets came just days after Russia launched a hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile at Ukraine in response to a US and British decision to allow Kiev to strike Russian territory with advanced Western weapons.
The US bombers did not change their pre-planned flight plan during the interception which was deemed safe and professional by the Russian Su-27s, the US official told Reuters.
On Monday, US B-52 bombers flew alongside Finnish F/A-18Cs during a US-Finnish exercise in Finnish airspace.
The Finnish Air Force said in a statement emailed to Reuters that US fighter jets and bombers conducted a training mission in Finnish airspace on Monday as part of efforts to strengthen Finland’s defense capability.
The Finnish Air Force statement did not refer to the Russian intercept, but said the exercise included “air-to-ground drop simulations that demonstrate our ability to cooperate in fire missions,” adding that the cooperation also contributed to collective defense and deterrence of NATO in the far north.
Finland, abandoning its long-standing policy of neutrality, suddenly joined NATO in 2023 after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
