San Francisco. Google, the Alphabet company GOOGL.O, launched a smartphone application of its artificial intelligence chatbot on Apple’s AAPL.O App Store on Thursday, introducing the latest generation of its voice assistant to the popular mobile operating system.
The new Gemini app will include Gemini Live, a voice-based feature that allows users to have natural conversations with the chatbot. Apple has already said it will bring OpenAI’s ChatGPT to a revamped version of its voice assistant, Siri.
“It’s great for practicing for an interview, asking for advice on what to do in a new city, or developing creative ideas,” said Brian Marquardt, director of product management at Google.
Gemini is Google’s answer to ChatGPT, the popular app developed by OpenAI, backed by Microsoft MSFT.O. Google initially launched it in February 2023 under the name Bard, and since then it has been adding more features while weathering controversies.
Google announced the voice feature during an event in August, bringing it for the first time to phones running its own mobile operating system, Android.
Technical advances in AI, driven by the rise of large language models, have led to the emergence of a new generation of voice assistants much more capable than Amazon AMZN.O’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant.
Google’s Gemini Live replaces Assistant, an eight-year-old product already built on older AI technology.
