Jakarta –
The former Governor of DKI Jakarta from 2012-2017, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama responded to the proposal of the Vice President of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to abolish the zoning system in New Student Admission (PPDB). Ahok still supports zoning, but improvements must be implemented.
“I support zoning (being there). This zone is necessary, but the way in which it is implemented must be (take care of) first,” said the figure known as Ahok, at an event to discuss the 10-year impact of the Seruni Faculty .of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (FEB UI) at the Assembly Hall, Depok, Monday (25/11/2024).
Need a Pro-People District Head
Ahok also shared his story when he was the Governor of DKI Jakarta. He was angry because many students from poor families had difficulty going to school even though they lived close to the school.

“Then I started giving quotas if the marks weren’t very good. Those who couldn’t pay had to go to school near their home, (while ‘sab’ could) people who could go to school further away,” he said.
However, Ahok realized that this idea could not be implemented immediately. This is because schools still need smart students.
The former Pertamina Commissioner President cannot deny also that there are many people in the field who cheat the zoning system. Both false administration and levels.
“Then what happened, falsification of values. Not all these people,” stressed Ahok.
To reduce various recurring assignment problems, one thing that can be done is that leaders or department heads are willing to open up, listen to complaints, and issue policies that are for people.
Not only at the middle level, Ahok believes that decentralized autonomy is necessary in the workplace. As the departments have a better understanding of the conditions on the ground, implementation needs to be closely monitored.
“The decentralization of the workplace is necessary because the departments understand better. But if there is no strict direction, (individuals) will be attracted to this corrupting blame (and cheating) ,” he explained.
Zoning decision February 2025
Elsewhere, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu’ti, explained that he had not yet made a decision regarding the PPDB zoning system. Everything is being reviewed and a decision will be delivered in February 2025.
“We have not yet decided whether we will continue with the current scheme or, for example, abolish it completely or continue with several improvements, all of which will be based on the results of the study that we holding now,” he said. he said after the 2024 National Teachers’ Day Ceremony at Building A, Kemendikbudristek Complex, Jakarta, Monday (25/11/2024).
To date, the Ministry of Basic Education has conducted three studies related to zoning. First with the heads of educational organizations throughout Indonesia, the second with experts, the third with community groups.
It is hoped that no later than February 2025, the decision on the PPDB Zoning system will be announced.
“We hope that we can announce in February so that will be in the new academic year 2025-2026,” concluded Mu’ti.
For information, the Vice President of Indonesia Gibran Rakabuming Raka had requested that the zoning system in the PPDB be removed or abolished. He made this statement at the Muhammadiyah Youth Tanwir 1 event in Aryaduta, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (21/11/2024).
Gibran said that this instruction was given directly to the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) at the Coordination Meeting (Rakor) for the Evaluation of Primary and Secondary Education Policy.
The Ministry of Basic Education held in Jakarta, Monday (11/11/2024, a coordination meeting involving the Heads of Regional and Regency/City Education Services throughout Indonesia).
“Yesterday, at a coordination meeting with the heads of educational organizations, I sent this firmly to the Minister of Education. Sir, this zone must be abolished,” said Gibran.
