to the a never ending story around the building where Café Kadoelen was located for several years, it seems to be coming to an end. Many local residents on the Landsmeerdijk in Noord will have been hoping for a different finish. Some of them campaigned for a new cafe in the building, but that is now likely to be cancelled.
Café Kadoelen disappeared about seven years ago, because the building where it was located was no longer safe. The project developer left the building knock down. Something after the fact illegal it turned out, because the cafe was part of a protected village scene on the Landsmeerdijk.
The developer of the Ferry Prud’homme de Lodder project wanted to build two houses there, but after complaints from local residents, it was agreed with the town to build one house and one food facility on the plot.
Not at all
But food still doesn’t seem to be available. Although three so-called supply brokers have been used, no new operator has been found, says a spokesman for the town.
“You have to sell a lot of sandwiches and coffee to make that amount back”
The group of local people were thinking of buying the building themselves, but it was ultimately decided against because of the asking price. The developer of the project wants 1 million euros for the building. “Incredibly high price,” they say to themselves.
Local resident Erik says he understands why an operator has not been found. “You have to sell a lot of sandwiches and coffee to earn that. Business wise “I understand it, but I still think it’s a shame.”
Local residents have been concerned for some time about the decline of the catering industry in this part of Amsterdam. According to them, the fact that the Kadoelen cafe does not seem to be returning makes things better.
“In 2017 you could still drink beer and eat sour food here,” says Monique, also one of the local residents who hoped that a new cafe would be built. “Very sad for the neighborhood, there is no place to meet now.”
Permission for a home
Prud’homme de Lodder, the developer of the project, says that he does not see it as crazy: “This is the moment as it is now. Nobody wants it, so it is not between – different. I’m very neutral about that,” he tells the phone. “Come with a bag of money and we’ll talk.”
Now that no operator has been found, the building that was meant to be a supply facility becomes a house after all. The city grants this permission through a special permit; the zoning plan will not be changed. “Sourcing at that location is still possible in theory,” a city spokesman said in response.
