A “large portion” of the southern terminal at Gatwick Airport, south of London, has been evacuated as a precaution while an unspecified “security incident” is investigated.
As the airport, the second busiest in the United Kingdom, published on its social network account X, passengers will not be able to enter that terminal while the incident is resolved.
«We are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. The safety of our passengers and our staff remains our top priority,” the airport said in the message.
Likewise, he asked all travelers to check with the airlines about the status of their planned flights.
Sussex Police explained in a statement that it has deployed a security cordon around the southern terminal, following “the discovery of a suspected prohibited item in luggage.”
A suspicious device detonation team has been deployed to the scene after the police launched an operation after being alerted at 8.20 (same time GMT) this morning.
“This is causing significant disruption, and some roads around the southern terminal have been closed. “We advise the public to avoid the area when possible,” the Police said, while asking for “patience” while the incident is managed.
As reported by the BBC, all train services stopping at Gatwick are not stopping at that station, and will continue not to do so for at least an hour.
According to the same source, buses bound for the airport no longer have access to the facilities either.

**Given the emphasis on traveler safety and security, should airports invest in advanced screening technologies or adopt more stringent passenger screening procedures, even if it means potentially longer wait times?**
