One of the soldiers, Nabil, said he was part of a large group of about 200 Yemenis who arrived in Moscow in September and were sent to the front. He says that some in his group were experienced soldiers, but many of them were untrained.
Nabil claims he was lured to Russia with the promise of a successful job in security and engineering. He hoped that the money he earned would allow him to complete his studies.
Another mercenary interviewed by the FT, named Abdulla, said he was promised a one-time payment of US$10,000 and a monthly salary of US$2,000 for work in the production of machinery artificial flight. Arriving in Moscow on September 18, he and other Yemenis were taken from the airport to a facility a five-hour drive from Moscow.
When they refused to sign the contracts, one of the men there fired pistol bullets over the heads of the soldiers, Abdullah says.
He says that they were then taken to the border of Ukraine, where the soldiers received primitive military training. After that, they were sent to a military base near Rostov.
Abdullah claims that much of his group has already fallen in Ukraine.
