A source familiar with internal discussions told The Epoch Times that Trump recently invited his former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson to take the post, but Carson declined the invitation. However, Carson suggested that Trump nominate Turner for the post.
Trump’s transition team is still negotiating with Carson for other Cabinet positions, sources said.
The Epoch Times has reached out to Carson for comment.
After Trump announced the nomination, Carson congratulated Turner on X’s social media platform.
“Scott is a natural leader, a godly man, and an extraordinary talent,” Carson wrote.
Turner also posted a message thanking Trump for the nomination.
“I am thrilled to be working with a great team to build on the great work started by your last administration at HUD. I am deeply honored by your confidence in my nomination,” he wrote.Click here to view)
“I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my mentor. @RealBenCarson Few people are as compassionate and gracious as him, and I know I have a long way to go,” Turner wrote.
The “Opportunity Zone” program promoted by Trump in his first term encouraged private investment in low-income communities by providing tax breaks. These investment projects include: affordable low-income housing, clean technology, medical facilities, historic building development, and brownfield redevelopment.
The program was created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and has bipartisan support in Congress.
