Sixteen were injured in a fire in a German refugee shelter

The fire started on the site of the old Vogelsang barracks

NOS newstoday, 9:49 p.m

Sixteen people were injured in a fire at a refugee reception center in Germany. Ten of them were admitted to hospitals. Earlier reports said twenty people were injured, but police have revised that number down.

Authorities have not yet released any information about a possible motive. However, a 35-year-old resident of the shelter was arrested.

The fire broke out in the center of the reception center of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which crosses the Netherlands. The shelter is located in the Eifel, on the site of the old Vogelsang fortress. The shelter can accommodate 380 people.

Uncultivated

The fire started around 10:40 am in the loft of one of the buildings on the site. The fire spread so quickly that after a short time the entire building was engulfed in flames and could no longer be saved.

Two other buildings are unoccupied due to water and smoke damage. The residents have accommodation elsewhere in the area, the mayor of the area says WDR broadcaster.

The police, fire brigade and ambulance services have deployed more than a hundred personnel. The services had to contend with snow on access roads and very little fire water. Tankers have received additional water from a nearby village.
