The Toppers are back with their ‘Wrong and Naughty, but Gold’ performances. The professional party animals are as popular as ever for almost 20 years. This also raises the question of how long the current crop of Toppers will last. Rob Goossens (33) knows who would be ideal as a replacement as soon as one Topper no longer has the strength for him, he says in The BLVD Podcast.
“You can put it in there and you have a good show”
The first day tickets could be bought for the upcoming Toppers concerts, 110,000 tickets were sold. According to Luuk Ikink, there are not many other artists who can throw a party like Jeroen van der Boom, Jan Smit, René Froger and Gerard Joling. “You have hundreds of thousands of people in the Netherlands who think that’s great and would be happy to buy a ticket.”
Gerard Joling and René Froger have been part of De Toppers since the very beginning in 2005. Rob: “You can tell from Gerard that he is getting older, but you can move the concept.” So it is not surprising if there comes a time when the ‘old hands’ slow down and make room for young growth, he says. Luuk remembers the performance of Mart Hoogkamer, Robert van Hemert, Marco Schuitmaker and Yves Berendse at the Televizier-Ring Gala. “I also thought that he had the potential for a new club, which could also take over. However, Luuk believes that it is still too early for that.
Rob agrees, but sees a unique situation for one of the young singers: “If one of the current Toppers quits, you could put Mart Hoogkamer in now and you would have a great show.
According to the podcasters, this delay should be a way to enjoy De Toppers for a long time to come. “Just by not replacing it in one fell swoop it’s still more doable than you’ll be,” said Rob. Luuk has that idea: “You can’t say: ‘The Toppers stop here, these are the new Toppers.’ The public will not accept that.”
Rob can already see in his mind: René and Gerard take a step back and take a ‘consulting role’, Jeroen gets more creative freedom, Jan stays and one by one you introduce new person “And if Mart doesn’t like it, too bad, you try another one next year,” said Rob. Luuk: “A kind of internship.”
