Drug trafficking dismantled in Montpellier: nearly 200,000 euros of products and numerous weapons and ammunition seized

A young couple from Cité Gély, in Montpellier, and a man living in Juvignac, to the north of the city, were arrested. While awaiting their trial, the two men were imprisoned, and the woman placed under judicial supervision.

At the end of last August, anonymous information was communicated to the national police concerning drug trafficking (cannabis and cocaine) at Cité Gély in Montpellier. The surveillance put in place by the investigators makes it possible to put a name to each actor in this organization: a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman living in Cité Gély, and a 35-year-old man based in Juvignac, north of the agglomeration.

The first was arrested in connection with another case on the night of November 14 to 15. During this time, the police noticed that the young woman was working to “clean” the apartment in Cité Gély. She takes narcotics to a hotel near Place de la Comédie.

Cocaine, cannabis and 355 magnum

Loaded Kalashnikov magazine

In the couple’s apartment, also searched, there were more than 16 kg of cannabis resin, a kilo of weed, 20 g of cocaine, 15 g of ecstasy as well as several weapons: a loaded Kalashnikov magazine, a sawed-off shotgun, and different calibers of ammunition. Finally, from the Juvignacois, more than 6,000 euros and two handguns were seized.

The total market value of the seized products amounts to almost 200,000 euros. The three accused were referred to the prosecution. The two men were placed in pre-trial detention, the woman under judicial supervision. Their trial was postponed until January 25.

The dismantling of this traffic is part of the “clearance” operation underway in the Gambetta, Clemenceau districts and their surroundings. During an initial assessment, the public prosecutor stressed that “Faced with such a quantity of money and weapons, we are close to organized crime profiles.”

Beyond law ‍enforcement efforts ‍and sentencing, what long-term social and economic initiatives could effectively address the underlying factors that⁤ contribute to the‍ emergence of drug trafficking networks in vulnerable communities like those targeted in the “clearance” operation?
