US President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday named Pam Bondi, former Florida attorney general, to the position of US attorney general, just hours after his other choice, Matt Gaetz, withdrew his name from the consideration.
Bondi is a former Trump ally and was one of his lawyers during his first impeachment trial, when he was accused – but not convicted – of abusing his power by trying to condition US military aid to Ukraine on that country investigating the then-former vice president. Joe Biden.
He was part of a group of Republicans who showed up to support Trump in his criminal impersonation trial in New York, which ended in May with a conviction on 34 felonies. She has been president of the America First Policy Institute, a think tank created by former Trump administration employees.
Furthermore, for almost two decades she was attorney general of Florida and, from there, she sought to be “very tough on violent criminals, (…) she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs and reduce the tragedy of fentanyl overdose deaths, (…) …) and made the streets safe for families,” highlighted the businessman, who added that “he did such an incredible job that I asked him to be part of our Commission on Drug Abuse and Opioids during my first term.”
For all this, Trump trusted that “he will do an excellent job,” serving his country.
“For too long, the partisan Justice Department has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. “Pam will refocus the Department of Justice on its intended purpose of Fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again,” he said.
This appointment requires the approval of the Senate.
Bondi was nominated for the position just hours after Gaetz declined his candidacy to serve in this office, during the incoming Trump presidency, in the wake of the intense scrutiny that was being carried out over a federal sex trafficking investigation, which called into question his ability to be confirmed for the position.
“While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance transition. There is no time to waste in an unnecessarily prolonged fight in Washington (…) Trump’s Justice Department must be in place and ready from day one,” he said when breaking the news.
The election of the Republican for this position is key – his inner circle even considers that he is the most important member of the Government after the president – since he will be the one who facilitates the execution of a large part of his agenda, which includes mass deportation projects. , the pardons for those accused of the assault on the Capitol and the retaliation against those who persecuted him during the last four years.
In the past, Trump was very critical of the actions of the Department of Justice and even called it an obstructionist.
