No uniform standards for measuring the reach of podcasts in Germany
How can podcast numbers be reliably measured? While magazines and newspapers, radio and television rely on uniform standards, there is currently no such standard for podcasts in Germany. The charts used in this article are based on the rankings from Apple and Spotify, the currently largest platforms for podcasts. However, they each use their own criteria when compiling the chart.

The USA is already one step further in this regard and uses the so-called IAB standard for the uniform measurement of podcast downloads. This standard, created by the Interactive Advertising Bureau, serves, among other things, to offer podcasters and advertisers more comparability of reach on the market. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) is an international trade association for the online advertising industry that represents the interests of the digital advertising and media industry and advocates for harmonization and standardization.
Players such as Audible, Libsyn, MidRoll Media, Podtrac and Nielsen have taken part in the standard. Platforms like Spotify also use the guide in the USA to measure the performance of a podcast.

How are the charts on iTunes created?
Since iTunes is currently the most used platform for podcasts, it is usually also the first point of contact for current podcast charts, which Apple publishes several times a day and makes available to all users. In fact, no one apart from Apple knows how exactly the iTunes charts really work. Because the ranking does not seem to be formed after downloads have been made in descending order. So For example, the podcaster Daniel Friesenecker managed to reach number one in the Austrian iTunes charts with just three downloads.
Exactly how the charts come about can only be guessed at – a mixture of different factors is conceivable, such as subscriber numbers, views, ratings, downloads and other user interactions. Additionally, the iTunes podcast charts are updated several times a day, so there may be several most popular podcasts per day.
