Outgoing US President Joe Biden celebrates his 82nd birthday today, making him by far the oldest sitting head of state.
Biden had not scheduled a public appearance today, just hours after returning from Brazil.
Family, friends and associates – including first lady Jill Biden and former President Barack Obama – wished him well in posts on social media platforms.
“Happy birthday to my good friend and our amazing president, Joe Biden,” wrote US Vice President Kamala Harris in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Biden dropped out of the race in July, in part because many voters believed he was too old to handle the job, especially after his disappointing performance in a phone-in battle with Republican Donald Trump in June.
Trump, 78, easily defeated his 60-year-old Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, in the November 5 presidential election. At the end of his presidency, Trump is set to break Biden’s record, as he will be 82 years and 7 months old when he leaves office in 2029.
Before Biden, the record for the oldest sitting US president was held by Ronald Reagan, who left the White House at the age of 77.
