By Rodrigo Meléndez Prenk
Bogotá November 22, 2024 (Senate Press) Senator Julio Alberto Elías Vidal (Party of the U) was very optimistic about the future of the project that eliminates the reconnection charge for telephone and Internet services in the country. The initiative approved in the Senate reaches the House of Representatives and its author and speaker in the Senate trusts that the process will be expeditious so that Colombians finally stop paying for the reconnection of these services.
The congressman maintained that “it costs telephone and internet companies nothing to reconnect the service, in most cases it is just pressing a button which does not generate costs.”
The legislator clarified that sometimes there could be costs for companies that provide these services, for example, when they must reach remote areas or when the service is physical through cables. In these cases it was necessary to reach an agreement with the operators and reconcile with the proposals that other congressmen presented in this regard.
“I see a good atmosphere in the House of Representatives, I have already spoken with the person who is going to be the speaker in the Sixth Commission of the Chamber and I do not think he will have problems because this is a totally social project and it is at the service of all telecommunications users in the country, surely the debate will be enriched in the Chamber and I will be attentive to support it as an author,” added the congressman.
Senator Julio Elías Vidal explained that this initiative was born from the logic of the popular economy when he noted that if a person is not able to pay a bill because their economic condition did not allow it, much less will they be able to pay that same bill when it arrives. a reconnection charge, which in most cases is onerous, especially for people from popular strata.
