The Milwaukee Bucks started the season limping like lame horses. They lost eight of their first ten matches. Even when they managed to make it two wins in a row, in the middle of the week ending, it took the Giannis Antetokounmpo to destroy the counters with 59 personal points to help the Bucks overcome the mediocre Detroit Pistons in overtime.
“Whoever doesn’t get angry with defeats, let him unbutton and leave” declared the Greek star, with the courage of a leader. Three and a half years after the 2021 title, the first nectar for Milwaukee after half a century of drought, the Bucks are in danger of being out of the playoffs. “Yiannis has blood on his hands” commented bitterly from the commentator’s chair the immoderate but always sharp Kendrick Perkins. “As he made his bed, so shall he sleep.”
The reason bed was laid in the summer of 2023, right after the Bucks were eliminated by the Miami Heat 4-1 in the first round of the playoffs. The groundbreaking moves that followed seem to have been made with the blessing of John, with the aim of returning the team to the ridge and keeping the restless “Greek freak” in town.
Trainers carousel
Coach Mike Budenholzer, who led the team to the 2021 title, was left in tatters overnight after being blamed for two consecutive early eliminations. Defensive stalwart Jrue Holiday was traded to the Blazers, and through them to the Celtics (with whom he would win another championship in June ’24), to make way for diminutive three-pointer Damian Lillard. The coach’s suit was worn by capable but inexperienced assistant Adrian Griffith, who was fired after one quarter even though the team was second in the East with a 30-13 record.
Accomplished but largely obsolete Doc Rivers took the helm in a flurry of January 2024, on a four-year contract worth a total of $38 million. euro. The season ended with another flag flying as Giannis was injured again in the playoffs (as he had been the previous spring) and the Bucks were ignominiously eliminated in the first round by the Indiana Pacers 2-4.
The “autonomy” of 2023 also has an economic dimension. In order to keep the core of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez intact alongside newcomer Lillard, the Bucks exceeded the luxury tax ceiling and had to pay a heavy price. Trapped by the relevant regulation, they are no longer able to launch corrective actions that do not involve selling something basic. The players called upon to frame the quartet against a lens board are either inexperienced or of low quality.
Middleton, 33, underwent double ankle surgery last summer and remains sidelined with an unknown return date. Lillard is a good scorer but can’t score anyone, while starting center Lopez is nearing 37, so the once-vaunted defense is struggling everywhere.
And Doc Rivers looks powerless to stop the bleeding after missing 31 of his first 52 games on the Bucks bench. The next day may find him in an administrative position, with the parallel hiring of another coach, who is being sought behind the scenes. The moves that would have convinced Giannis that he had no reason to think about moving almost all turned into boomerangs. The “bloody” fingers that Perkins spoke of don’t allow him to pull the trigger and apportion blame.
Sirens…top
From the very beginning of the season, before the missteps began, Giannis confessed that a possible failure can open the front door and bring a bunch of suitors to the doorstep. A number of NBA teams, not cheap but ambitious and loaded, such as the Oklahoma City Thunder (10-2), the Golden State Warriors (9-2) and the New York Knicks (5-6), are freeing up space in their own salary cap. and they sing the sweet song of the sirens to lure the sought-after bridegroom.
Our man isn’t one to jump ship without hesitation, but now that he’s turning 30 (Dec. 6) he’s seeing the hourglass empty. If the Bucks decide to go through with a full rebuild, they’re going to blow the whistle and trade him without even asking.
Giannis has a contract with the Bucks until 2028 and is expected to collect 166 million. euros in the next three years, but that doesn’t say much. His next team will pay that pocket with a warm heart and likely reward him with a new extension. NBA experts believe that Giannis with his perfect off-court life and statuesque body will remain in the elite for another five or six years, maybe even more.
“No one is going to feel sorry for us,” Giannaros warned after a painful loss in Boston. The Bucks have had a tough start to the schedule and are looking forward to Middleton’s return. “If we don’t sweat, we’ll lose. All my life I’ve learned to fight and that’s what I’ll do now.” The horizon over the Great Lakes remains cloudy and the waters rough.
