A Pioneering Project: EDP and SRP Develop a 200 MW Energy Storage System in Arizona

A new agreement between EDP Renewables North America (EDP subsidiary) and Salt River Project (SRP) marks a significant step in the integration of renewable energy in the United States. The 200 MW/800 MWh Flatland Energy Storage project will be built near Coolidge, Arizona, and is expected to be operational as early as 2025.

This lithium-ion battery storage system, manufactured in the United States by Tesla, will provide electricity to more than 45,000 homes during periods of peak demand. By absorbing excess energy when demand is low and releasing it during peak consumption, this project will help stabilize the state’s energy grid.

Essential Support for the Energy Transition

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play a central role in modernizing energy infrastructure and integrating renewable sources. Flatland is designed to address the challenges of renewable energy intermittency, improve energy efficiency and strengthen grid stability.

Sandhya Ganapathy, Chief Operating Officer of EDP Renewables North America, noted that this project represents the largest global storage initiative for the EDP Group. “This project will accelerate the adoption of renewable energy while increasing the resilience and reliability of the U.S. energy grid,” she said.

Economic and Social Impact

In addition to its environmental benefits, the Flatland project is expected to stimulate the local economy. During construction, it will generate 60 jobs and maintain two permanent positions for future operations. Additionally, EDP is committed to supporting local small businesses throughout the life of the project.

The project is located in the Brittlebush Solar Park, also opened this year by EDP, SRP and Meta. This synergy between the installations will optimize solar energy production, using the battery to store electricity and meet demand when necessary.

A Strengthened Partnership

Flatland Energy Storage is the latest achievement in a successful collaboration between EDP Renewables and SRP. The two entities had previously worked together on the Brittlebush Solar Park, a 200 MW solar project also located in Coolidge.
