The combination of money and power is not a new phenomenon in American – and not only – political history. At the helm of the USA there have been presidents with business experience, among them o George Bush and the Herbert Hoover. The case of Donald Trump is different, however, as all his wealthy predecessors had already jumped into politics before running for the highest office of the land. In contrast, Trump is the first to have never held high government or military office.
In the country where the political system favors the intermediation of lobbyists, the (re)election of Trump seems to be bypassing the political middlemen. A very rich man directly takes the reins and runs the world’s most powerful country as if it were his company, this time having the world’s richest man as his right-hand man. THE Elon Musk he’s yet another politically-involved crooner who runs his businesses with government money (SpaceX) or promotional policy (Tesla), and is preparing to take over as an entrepreneur to trim government spending in “corporate USA.”
After his first victory the tycoon further developed his business activity with companies, hotels, casinos, golf courses and focused on the New York tabloids. His business-political model, however, proved far from beneficial for the USA: during his presidency, the country faced the greatest economic pressure since the 1930s and the greatest racial unrest since the late 1960s. At the same time, the his tenure was marred by the sad record of 230,000 deaths due to the mismanagement of the pandemic and paid the cost for all in the 2020 election.
The 78-year-old may be the first billionaire US president, but he follows in the footsteps of other tycoons who have moved into the political arena. With a typical example of Silvio Berlusconi in Italy, most tried to transfer their experience from business management to running the country, but their terms were marked by choices that did not satisfy the citizens and scandals (from the infamous “bunga bunga” parties to the case of the 17-year-old ” Ruby”). In 2011, Italy found itself on the brink of the cliff due to unthinkable debt, as a result of which the “cavalier” resigned, without giving up business and politics.
Berlusconi, like Trump, liked to flaunt his lavish lifestyle. Both started their careers in real estate and established themselves through the media. To his critics the three-time Italian prime minister, who built a fortune buying TV stations, was a populist who threatened to undermine democracy by using political power as a tool to further strengthen his businesses and gain immunity. for anything… illegal.
This model could also include Sebastian Piñera, president of Chile from 2018 to 2022, with a financial empire that included a stake in the country’s largest airline, a channel and a soccer team. Massive protests broke out under his rule in 2019 as the already deep social inequalities that fueled social discontent for years worsened.

Can the rise of business-savvy politicians in countries like Italy and Chile serve as a model for the United States, or are there inherent risks that come with this trend?
Welcome to our exclusive interview, Ms. Smith! To begin with, could you please tell us your thoughts on the trend of wealthy entrepreneurs taking on high-profile political roles in the USA? Do you believe that their business acumen translates well into effective governance practices?
Ms. Jones, Mr. Trump’s presidency has been controversial, to say the least. Many argue that his business dealings have created conflicts of interest and hindered his ability to serve the American people appropriately. How do you think his unique position as a business-politician has impacted his tenure as president?
Ms. Smith, we’ve also seen a rise in popularity for politicians with strong business backgrounds in other countries like Italy and Chile. What do you think are some of the pros and cons of this trend?
Mr. Musk, as someone who has experienced immense success in both the business and political realms, what advice would you offer to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to engage more deeply in civic matters? How can they navigate potential conflicts of interest while still pursuing their passion for entrepreneurship?
In your expert opinion, Ms. Smith, how has the role of social media and the media in general changed the way politicians with business ties operate? Do you think this has had a positive or negative impact on democracy?
Ms. Jones, we cannot ignore the global pandemic that has affected the world in recent years. How do you think Donald Trump’s profit-seeking approach to governance has impacted America’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, especially when compared to his predecessors with more traditional political backgrounds?
Lastly, Ms. Smith, what lessons can we learn from the interplay between business and politics in countries like Italy and Chile that might help us better understand the situation in America today? Are there any warning signs we should be heeding regarding the power of wealthy individuals and their influence on government decision-making?
