The Pentagon’s announcement came a week after the group Houthi Yemen successful claim in attacking an aircraft carrier and several American warships in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
Despite the withdrawal of the USS Abraham Lincoln from the Middle East, the Pentagon claims that it maintains sufficient capabilities to face various threats in the region.
The USS Abraham Lincoln left the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility over the weekend and entered the 7th Fleet area of operations in the Indo-Pacific.
Earlier this month, the US announced the deployment of additional ballistic missile defense destroyers, fighter and tanker squadrons, and several B-52 long-range attack bombers to the region while preparations began for the USS Abraham Lincoln (Abe left).
Abe arrived in the Middle East in August after US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered him to accelerate his move to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt’s Carrier Strike Group and maintain a presence in the region.
The move comes amid increased deployment of US military assets and troops after threats by Iran and its proxies to retaliate against Israel for the killing of top Hamas and Hezbollah figures in attacks in Tehran and Beirut. .
Iran last attacked Israel with hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones on April 13 and October 1. Israel then responded by attacking Iran on October 26, and Iran threatened to retaliate again.
Tensions continue to simmer in the Middle East, with Israel’s war in Gaza raging and another major war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon breaking out in September.
Washington has sent additional assets to the region since the Gaza war broke out following the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel. That includes the presence of aircraft carriers in and around the Red Sea, especially to repel Houthi attacks from Yemen on commercial and merchant ships.
