Doubling the number of people with dementia and osteoarthritis by 2050 – PONT Zorg&Sociaal

The number of people with chronic disease will increase further to nearly twelve million in 2050. Depression and osteoarthritis in particular are increasing dramatically. It is expected that the number of people with these diseases will double by 2050. This is evident from the new future Public Health vision (VTV) that the RIVM will soon publish.

RIVM November 19, 2024

The number of people with dementia will increase from 261,000 in 2022 to 506,000 in 2050. It’s not just old people: 6% of people with dementia are between 40 and 65 years old. Dementia mainly causes problems with memory, speech, recognition and performing daily tasks.

3 million people with osteoarthritis in 2050

The number of people with osteoarthritis (a form of rheumatism) is expected to rise from 1.6 million in 2022 to 3 million in 2050. Complaints associated with osteoarthritis include pain and (partial) paralysis. Other conditions that will become more common in 2050 include personal, work and sports accidents, neck and back problems and kidney failure. On the other hand, lung cancer, for example, is declining significantly.

More often several situations

The VTV (In the Public Health Future Outlook (VTV), the RIVM reports every four years on the development of public health in the Netherlands.) also shows that the number of people known to the doctor- have a family member with one or more illnesses increasing from 10 to 5 million in 2022 to nearly twelve million in 2050. The biggest increase is among people over 75. The number of people with three conditions or more rising from 3.3 to 4.3 million. So this number is increasing much faster than people with one or two chronic diseases.

About the VTV

The results mentioned above come from Outlook Health Public Future (VTV) 2024. The RIVM publishes the VTV every four years. In the VTV, RIVM discusses developments in public health and care up to 2050. The full report will be published on 27 November.
