The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said today that it had detected the CS tear gas used to quell riots in samples sent to it from Ukraine, which is against the use of chemical weapons.
These samples were taken last month from the front line with Russia, from the Dnipropetrovsk region.
“The results of the analyzes of these samples, which were carried out by two laboratories, separately and independently of each other, show that the grenade found in the trench and the soil sample (…) contained the agent 2-chlorobenzamalononitrile, known as designation CS,” the Agency said.
The Chemical Weapons Convention prohibits the use of riot control substances, such as CS gas, as a means of warfare.
It is the first time that a gas has been confirmed to suppress riots in Ukraine’s war zones.
Kiev had asked the Hague-based OPCW to send a team of technicians and handed them three samples last month. According to the Ukrainian authorities, the samples were taken on September 20 near the village of Ilinka, in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
The OPCW pointed out that its investigation did not seek to ascertain the source or origin of the toxic chemical.
Britain and the US accuse Russia of using toxic gas against Ukrainian soldiers in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Russia and Ukraine also accuse each other of using such chemical weapons.
Tear gas is not lethal but causes temporary irritation to the eyes and respiratory system.
The OPCW’s findings will be discussed at a meeting of the Organization’s 193 member countries in The Hague next week.
