A technical error in France: the Auxerre captain asks the referee to replay the match

ROMA – “Replay the game”. A written sheet, signed by the captain of Auxerre Jubalput the outcome of the French Ligue1 match between Lyon and Auxerre at risk. An official document, in which the visiting team had to record what it considers to be a technical error by the match director. It is called “technical reserve” and could lead to the match being replayed. But let’s go in order.

A “technical reserve” in Lyon-Auxerre

The first half of the Lyon match was expiring when the referee Tenaciousrecalled to the VAR, awarded Lyon a penalty against Auxerre, which was then scored by Mikautadze. Christophe Pelissiercoach of Auxerre, asked his players to leave the pitch. At that point Jubal, the captain of the visiting team, officially raised a “technical reservation”. For what reason? Before the penalty was awarded, play had been stopped because the ball had gone out. Jubal then officially contested the decision, signing the document certifying the report of a technical error together with the referee. But what is a “technical reserve”? This is a sort of right of review at the end of the match, which can be raised by the captain of a team when he believes that the referee has committed a technical error: not a questionable evaluation, but a regulatory error. Such as using VAR after the restart of the game. The request will be sent to a committee which, if it actually judges the episode to be a technical error, could decide to replay the match.

The precedents

In Italy in 1993, during the Turin-Naples match directed by Graziano Cesari, the Granata kicked off in both regular periods. In that case, the technical error was not judged to be influential and the match was not replayed. In France, however, a somewhat similar case occurred in 2017, when in Troyes-Amiens there was an incorrect report from the Goal line technology and Amiens had the goal annulled by raising a technical reserve.
