Trump nominates Dr. Mehmet Oz to fill the position of Director of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will nominate Dr. Mehmet Oz to take over the position of director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Trump said in a statement: “There is a health care crisis in America, and there may be no doctor more qualified and capable than Dr. Oz to make America healthy again.”

“Dr. Oz is a leader in leading disease prevention so that we get the best outcomes in the world for every dollar we spend on health care in our great country,” he said.

“It will also work to reduce waste and fraud within our nation’s most expensive government agency, which accounts for a third of our nation’s health care spending, and a quarter of our entire national budget.”

Oz was a cardiothoracic surgeon before appearing as a health expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the 1990s before finally getting his own show in 1999. Since then, he has be publicly involved in many health sectors.
Trump is said to have been overseeing Oz’s television appearances during the COVID-19 pandemic, and became an informal adviser to the then-President.

Mehmet Oz, known as “Dr. He was born on June 11, 1960 in Cleveland, Ohio, to a Turkish immigrant father and a Circassian mother. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Harvard University, and studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he specialized in surgery.

Dr. Mehmet Oz began his medical career at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and was a proponent of alternative medicine, including techniques such as hypnosis and acupuncture in his treatments. He also founded the Health Authority which focuses on obesity and health problems, and co-founded the health care company Sharecare.

In 2021, he entered the world of politics by running for the Senate in Pennsylvania, the first Muslim to run for a major party. Despite President Trump’s support for him, he lost the election against his Democratic rival, John Fetterman. Mehmet Oz is known for his moderate political views, and has stated that he is a secular Muslim and opposes the implementation of Sharia law in America.
