Cultural activity in Mexico slowed down and fewer jobs were created in 2023

In 2023, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the culture sector reported an amount of 820,963 million pesos, which represented an annual growth of 2.6 percent, revealed the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The Institute, which presented the results of the update of the Cultural Satellite Account of Mexico (CSCM) 2023, which provides a comprehensive vision of the dimension, evolution and composition of the cultural sector in Mexico, estimated that the cultural activity of the country suffered a significant slowdown from 2022, when it showed growth of 9.3 percent, to 2023.

The cultural GDP had a contribution of 2.7 percent to the GDP of the total economy (this is made up of market, household and public management activities) last year.

Market activities, carried out by private agents and that generate cultural goods and services for profit, contributed 2.19 percent of the GDP of the cultural sector, those related to households, such as voluntary work in the organization of cultural activities or trade of cultural products on public roads, among others, contributed 0.39 percent and those of public management, –activities carried out by government units and that contribute to facilitating access, dissemination, development and strengthening of cultural activities–, 0.16 percent.

At constant values, the GDP of the cultural sector grew 2.6 percent and the total economy, 3.2 percent. From 2008 to 2023, Inegi estimated that the industry showed an average annual increase of 0.9 percent.

The Institute, chaired by Graciela Márquez, described that the areas with the greatest contribution to GDP were crafts, with 19.1 percent; digital content and the Internet, –such as access and transmission of digital content–, with 18.1 percent; audiovisual media, such as television or cinema, with 17.6 percent, and design and creative services, with 13.6 percent.

The areas of the culture sector with the greatest growth were digital content and the internet, with an annual increase of 9.6 percent in 2023; cultural and natural heritage, 9.1 percent; as well as the visual and plastic arts, 5.4 percent.

On the other hand, the areas with the greatest decrease were books, printing and press, with an increase of 8.5 percent; and music and concerts, 5.5 percent.

The economic activities of the cultural sector generated one million 439 thousand 671 jobs in 2023, which is equivalent to 3.5 percent of the total economy, but there were 20 thousand 906 fewer jobs (1.4 percent) compared to the 2022.
