Will cinema soon be completely meaningless? Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s new film, “Red One,” has gotten off to a rocky start on the big screens. The film has only grossed a fraction of the $250 million production costs so far. But film studio Amazon MGM doesn’t seem to care at all…
Briefly about the film – it couldn’t be more crazy: Santa Claus (JK Simmons, 69) is kidnapped. Now his security boss (Dwayne Johnson) and Chris Evans have to save him.
The preliminary box office result of “Red One” worldwide since its theatrical release last Friday: 84.1 million dollars. In the USA there were just around 34 million. The film is not even shown at German cinema box offices – such as those at Cineplex.
Because the film will soon be shown on Amazon Prime – German cinemas aren’t even participating.
Amazon manager appears calm
“We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out over the holidays. We have great competition behind us. “It’s no secret,” says Kevin Wilson, head of theatrical distribution at Amazon MGM, about upcoming films such as ‘Wicked,’Gladiator II‘ and ‘Moana 2’ according to “Variety“. “But we offer something different than those films.”
The Amazon manager argues: The shipping giant is interested in increasing its Prime Video customers. This should be achieved with the attention generated by the cinema release. And: The marketing costs are already covered with the current box office result.

“Whether people like it or not, the value of these films is different to our business model,” Wilson says. “If we can get these films into theaters and cover our printing and advertising costs, why shouldn’t we? We get a massive marketing campaign that is already paid for before the film is available on streaming.”
This means: Amazon doesn’t care at all that the film is currently performing rather modestly.
