After almost nine months, the German police have decided to clean up the prosecution camp at the Tesla factory near Berlin. According to a police spokesperson, environmental activists have violated the law several times and public order and safety are at risk.
Since, according to the police, it was not possible to contact the leader of the protest, the police no longer have confidence in a peaceful outcome. It was then decided to evacuate.
Since the end of February this year, a group of activists has been living in the forest near the large Tesla factory. Whole tree houses were built in the forest near Grünheide and the activists camped in the camp day and night.
Factory extension
They are protesting against the expansion of the car manufacturers’ factory, which would have to remove 100 hectares of forest. Their concerns are mainly focused on the consequences for groundwater: the factory is located in the middle of the drinking water protection zone. The factory uses a lot of water, and houses have been put on water allotments.
In a local referendum in the state of Brandenburg, local residents voted against the expansion at the beginning of this year. That referendum was not binding. Brandenburg will continue with the plans – with some changes.
Then the demonstrators began to live in the forest. They did this in specific areas designated by the authorities parts of the forest, not too close to the factory. Partly because of the right to demonstrate, the police acted first.
Explosives research
Yesterday, the police went out of the area and the protest camp had to be evacuated due to an investigation about bombs from the Second World War that are believed to be in the ground. The area, where the protest camp is also located, has been under investigation for explosives for some time.
However, the protesters refused to leave and climbed high into the trees. The police have now started to dismantle the tree houses and protesters are taking them away.
The activists who live in the forest near the factory said in a press release that they will not give up and said that they would organize a new protest on Saturday, November 23.
