On Monday evening, shortly before 5:50 p.m., the St. Gallen cantonal police received a report of a robbery at the post office on the state road in Oberriet SG. The two employees remained physically unharmed during the attack, as the St. Gallen cantonal police wrote in a press release.
No money could be stolen. The perpetrators fled on a motorcycle and had an accident while fleeing in Rheineck. They were injured and were subsequently arrested.
Employee tied up, witness intervened
According to current findings, the two men entered the back entrance of the post office, threatened and tied up a 19-year-old employee. A third person observed the situation. She approached a robber and a scuffle ensued. The courageous man was able to recognize a weapon on the suspected perpetrator.
Due to the argument, the men abandoned their plan and fled uninjured on a motorcycle without criminal property. Fortunately, the man who bravely intervened was not injured.
Accident during a chase
A major intercantonal manhunt was launched. Shortly before 6:40 p.m., the motorcycle with a stolen license plate was recognized by a St. Gallen cantonal police patrol on the A13 motorway near St. Margrethen. The patrol followed the motorcycle down the Rhine Valley.
The fugitives left the motorway in Rheineck and drove towards Thal. They drove around the roundabout in the wrong direction. While driving back towards the motorway, the motorcycle collided with a St. Gallen cantonal police patrol vehicle. The motorcyclist and his passenger fell and were injured. The two were taken to hospital by emergency services.
There is no information available about the two alleged perpetrators. They don’t carry any ID cards and don’t speak. The accident was recorded by a police force from outside the canton.
