The Municipal Council of Sozopol accepted the proposal of SNC “The Lighthouse of Apollonia” to place a bronze sculpture of an ancient inhabitant of the city playing the harp near Harmanite beach. It will be placed on a U-shaped pedestal that will serve as a frame for photos that tourists can take of the new symbol. The sculpture will tell the story of Sozopol and at the same time will serve as a sundial. At the feet of the figure will be an egg, a snake and a raven, symbolizing wisdom and knowledge.
“The aim of the initiative is to acquaint tourists with our history and spread our riches in the field of art and archaeology. In this way, we could enhance tourists’ interest in culture and add value to their summer stay. The site was chosen as an entrance space to the main part of the city, with good visibility and landscape. That way, all passers-by will be able to spot the figure, and the more inquisitive will get in-depth information about our history in local museums.” This was explained by the chairman of the association, Ivan Ivanov.
The intended bronze figure will be up to 2.00m tall. It will be placed on a concrete plinth measuring 80/80 cm, lined with stone. The composition will be in the grassy area near the beach “Harmani” and the revealed archeology in the ancient necropolis “Via Sacra”. More than 1,000 tombs, structures and numerous remains of funerary rites have been discovered there.
The figure will be made by the famous sculptor Georgi Andonov. The funds for it will be fully provided by SNC “The Lighthouse of Apollonia”.
