LINZ AG ABFALL: E-mobile new addition

The first fully electric waste disposal vehicle from LINZ AG ABFALL is in operation.

Since the beginning of November 2024, the innovative commercial vehicle has been on the road in downtown Linz collecting waste paper around 30,000 kilos of CO2 annually save. In the next few years, the e-mobile share of the fleet is expected to increase to at least ten vehicles. The deployment of five more electric trucks is planned for 2025. The basis for implementation is funding within the framework of the funding program “Emission-free commercial vehicles and infrastructure” (ENIN) of the Ministry of Climate Protection*.

In addition to the vehicles, e-mobile use requires the appropriate charging infrastructure. A charging point with an output of 22 kW is already available for the first electric vehicle. A total of six charging points with 44 kW and a fast charger with 150 kW are currently being installed in Linz’s Nebingerstrasse at the LINZ AG ABFALL location in preparation for the growing share of electric vehicles.

The new electric waste disposal vehicle at a glance

  • Loading capacity: Up to ten tons of waste paper can be collected with the 9.35 meter long electric vehicle and disposed of for recycling.
  • Battery capacity: With 450 kWh battery power, the vehicle has a range of around 200 kilometers in summer operation. This means that two day trips can be completed without any intermediate charging. The whole thing with an impressive drive power of 500 kW.

“The city of Linz wants to be climate neutral by 2040. To achieve this, the proportion of emission-free commercial vehicles in urban areas must increase. The first fully electric waste disposal vehicle is a milestone on this journey and underlines our commitment to a sustainable future. Not only does it save a significant amount of CO2, but it also reduces noise pollution. In any case, the new vehicle makes a decisive contribution to the circular economy and at the same time noticeably improves the environment and the quality of life in our city.”says Executive Vice Mayor Dietmar Prammer, who is responsible for waste management.

“LINZ AG strives to provide its services safely and as sustainably as possible. This also applies to waste disposal. By using electromobility for our garbage collection, we are continuing the e-mobile path at LINZ AG. We now have extensive e-mobile experience. The charging infrastructure required for use is implemented by in-house experts.”says LINZ AG General Director DI Erich Haider, MBA, about the new addition.

The vehicle for waste paper disposal is the beginning

The new electric vehicle drives for them Waste paper collection. The next four electric trucks will have other tasks.

“We are pleased about the first electric vehicle and the funding commitment behind it, which also represents the high CO2 savings potential through the fuel-intensive ‘stop and go’ operation of the garbage collection. We want to take part at the end of 2025 two residual waste vehicles, a tipper truck and a tractor unit travel e-mobile. The aim is to gain experience in as many areas of application as possible and to use it to further expand our e-fleet.”says Mag.a Linda Peer, head of LINZ AG ABFALL.

In addition to the purchase of electric trucks, the purchase of electric trucks is also planned by 2027 two lighter electric commercial vehicles planned.

Tests and training in advance

The new electric vehicle completed its first journeys in test operation before it began regular operation at the beginning of November. Both the tests and the first regular operations went very well.

„Die Driving characteristics and range measurements are absolutely satisfactory”says Ing. Andreas Augeneder, fleet manager at LINZ AG ABFALL. “In addition to zero emissions and loading capacity, maneuverability is also important, especially in the inner city area. Before regular operation, there were appropriate tests and driver training courses.”said Augeneder.

Funding commitment as a basis

The ten environmentally friendly e-waste vehicles (trucks) will be purchased by 2027 on the basis of a funding commitment from two pots for a total of 2.55 million euros as part of the “Emission-free commercial vehicles and infrastructure” (ENIN) funding program of the Ministry of Climate Protection. Over the next five years, 8.2 million euros will be distributed to a consortium of 13 member companies of the Association of Public Waste Management Companies (VÖA). LINZ AG was the consortium leader for the submission.

The LINZ AG ABFALL division will use these funds to: ten e-waste vehicles as well as those for it necessary e-charging infrastructure to acquire. The funding covers 80 percent of the additional costs of the emission-free drive and 40 percent of the infrastructure costs incurred.

How does LINZ AG ‍plan to enhance its‍ electric vehicle initiative⁤ beyond waste disposal, and what⁤ impact do you foresee on public attitudes towards waste management?

Hello, and welcome to today’s interview! I’m glad⁤ to⁤ introduce you to our guests: Erich Haider, MBA, General Director of LINZ AG, and Linda Peer, Head of⁤ LINZ ⁤AG‌ ABFALL. Thank you for⁢ taking ‍the time to join⁤ us today to discuss the exciting launch⁣ of the first fully electric waste disposal vehicle in ⁢Linz, Austria.

Firstly, can you tell‍ us a‍ bit about the process of developing and testing this new electric vehicle? What were some of the challenges and opportunities you faced in ⁤this project?

Secondly, ‍the ⁤vehicle’s ability to collect up to 30,0000 kilograms of CO2 annually is quite impressive. Can you elaborate on how important it is for LINZ ‍AG‌ to contribute to climate neutrality goals ⁤through waste management practices?

Moving on to the ⁢charging infrastructure, can⁣ you explain how LINZ AG ensures that the charging stations are maintained and accessible to ⁢the public?⁣ Are there any plans to expand ⁤charging station networks in the future?

We also understand that ⁢the ⁤new electric ⁤vehicle ‌is just the ⁣beginning ⁤of⁢ a⁤ larger initiative to transition to‌ e-mobility at LINZ AG. What are ‍some other areas you plan on implementing electric vehicles? And how⁤ do you think the public’s perception of waste management will change with the adoption of electric vehicles?

the funding received from the Ministry of⁣ Climate Protection‌ was essential in making this project a reality. As current leaders in the⁣ VÖA consortium, do you ⁣have any ‌advice for other companies‌ looking to implement ‍sustainable practices through electric vehicle use?

Thank you both for your time and insights. ⁤We appreciate it.
