LKH Südsteiermark: Boys got a taste of everyday hospital life

“Boys’ Day” is a tool to clean up gender stereotypes that are still prevalent when it comes to job profiles. At the South Styria State Hospital and at the LKH locations in Bad Radkersburg and Wagna, young men learned about occupations that were still dominated by women.

BAD RADKERSBURG/WAGNA. “Boys’ Day” was recently held at the LKH Südsteiermark. During the nationwide “Boys’ Future Day”, students had a unique opportunity to gain insights into the working world of the healthcare system at the LKH centers in Bad Radkersburg and Wagna. The aim of the action day is to get boys interested in careers traditionally dominated by women. This is still largely the case in the healthcare landscape.

A colorful program was offered to the youth at both the LKH locations. They were able to get to know different departments – in Bad Radkersburg, for example, the central sterilization, the intensive care unit and the outpatient area, as well as the sonography room at the Wagna location.

Practical exercises as the best motivation

The individual experts described their work processes, presented important tools and instruments and provided general insights into everyday hospital life. Especially interesting for the guests: they could also be active themselves and practice, for example, using bands or measuring blood pressure. At the same time, they also discovered the importance of teamwork in everyday hospital life.

“It is very important for us to give young people an understanding of the diversity and importance of careers in healthcare. ‘Boys’ Day’ is a great opportunity to reduce the fear of contact and build interest in these challenging but also rewarding activities,” said Thomas Singer, assistant director of nursing.
