Twelve cases of house burglaries in the Northern Suburbs were investigated by the New Philadelphia – New Chalkidona Security Department.
So far, a 45-year-old citizen was arrested on November 11 and brought to the prosecutor’s office, while a case file has been filed against 5 other people.
The total value of the defendants’ loot is estimated at over €60,000.
The gang and the modus operandi
The arrested 45-year-old is accused of forming a gang, which committed house burglaries as a profession, as an accomplice and as a follow-up.
Regarding their modus operandi, the defendants, from December 2023 to September 2024, with a different composition each time and moving in rented vehicles, entered the interior of houses by breaking windows and central doors, and removed sums of money, jewelry and electronic devices.
They resold all of this directly to embezzlers, reaching an illegal profit of at least €60,000.

The gang we apprehended consisted of five main individuals, including the 45-year-old man who was arrested on November 11th. They operated by committing house burglaries as a profession and used different compositions each time they struck. They rented vehicles to move around, making them more difficult to trace, and would break windows or central doors to enter the homes. They would then steal cash, jewelry, and electronic devices, which they later sold to embezzlers for a significant profit.
Dr. Papageorgiou, what are your thoughts on the rise of organized gangs like this one in today’s society? Do you think this highlights any broader societal issues that need to be addressed?
Dr. Alexia Papageorgiou: Absolutely. The existence of these organized gangs reflects a growing problem in our society where people feel the need to resort to criminal activities to make ends meet. It’s important for us to address the root causes of poverty and unemployment, as well as provide more opportunities for education and skills training to help people find legitimate work. Additionally, increasing security measures in neighborhoods can help deter these crimes from occurring in the first place.
