The Philadelphia 76ers are off to a terrible start in the 2024-25 season. In recent weeks, the team has experienced Joel Embiid’s suspension, Tyrese Maxey’s injury, and a dismal 2-10 record since the start of the season.
In this city of brotherly love, this is not the time to panic. Paul George is currently finding his rhythm and seems to be in good physical condition.
Even though Maxey suffered a hamstring injury, he still contributed to the team day after day. Kelly Oubre Jr. has performed consistently this season, averaging double figures in points per game with his ability to attack with the ball. Caleb Martin had a great performance against the Los Angeles Clippers, and Jared McCain might be the best dark horse in this draft.
Currently, the 76ers are struggling with offensive efficiency and scoring ability at critical moments in games. Perhaps head coach Nick Nurse should change the starting lineup. If you have to choose one person to take on this important task, the always passionate Guerschon Yabusele can be a good candidate. He leaves his mark on every game by fighting for the floor and going back.
The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and shot 37.9% from three-point range. His numbers may look vague, but his efficiency is crucial. The former Boston Celtics can impact the game without the ball and impact both ends of the floor. Yabusele’s strength, size and speed make other teams’ frontcourts unfair threats. He can get into the fast break quickly or cut behind defenders in the half court.
After each shot, Yabusele will attack the rebound with all his might. Once the shot is released, he quickly runs to the basket and often grabs several offensive rebounds to create second scoring opportunities for the team. In addition, Yabusele always tries his best on the defensive end and is good at intercepting passing lanes.
In the end, Yabusele did well in the French Olympics, paving the way for his return to the NBA. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old will not have the ball as much as he did in the Olympics, but he will still be an important part of the team’s puzzle and he has adopted the tactical philosophy that inspired Nurse.
Yabusele is a professional who aims to be a perfect team player and contributes to the team by bringing in other players. His ability to fit into any lineup will be crucial in the future.
If Nurse decides to shake up the starting lineup and add Yabusele, who will he remove? Caleb Martin or Oubre Jr. could be two possible candidates, as both have made significant contributions off the bench on previous teams.
Oubre Jr. averaged 17 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game, shooting 43.3% from the field and a dismal 30% from three-point range. However, he is able to create his own shot, finish the rim with both hands, and participate in fast breaks. The Kansas product always finds a way to score for his team or change the momentum of a game with a wild dunk. With consistency, it would be better to keep him in the starting lineup.
Martin was a key reserve player with the Miami Heat, but has started six games for the Sixers this season. He has struggled to find a rhythm early in the season and is currently shooting just 20% from three point range. The 6-foot-5 small forward averaged 10.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, but his shooting percentage was only a career low 33.8%.
Some players perform better on the bench because it allows them to rest their starters, give the offense more freedom to create, and feel more comfortable playing.
From a scoring point of view, the reduction of Martin’s appearance will not affect the team much (only a drop of 2.3 points), but the 76ers need to introduce new energy. Martin was originally introduced as a 3D player, but right now, it looks like his performance still needs work.
Again, it’s not time to panic yet and there’s no harm in trying to shake the line.
