President Biden wants to allocate $100 billion for emergency aid to the victims of hurricanes Helene and Milton in the US. He submitted this request to the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives.
More than 250 people were killed in the two devastating hurricanes. According to Biden, who still has two months before Donald Trump takes power, much more help is needed for the people who are suffering than has been given so far.
“Members of my administration and I have traveled throughout Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina meeting with families, business owners, farmers, first responders and local officials,” Biden wrote in the letter to House Speaker Johnson. “Then I learned firsthand what it will take from the federal government to completely recover.”
Emergency fund
About $40 billion should go to an emergency fund. This already exists, but according to Biden, there is a lack of money. Another $24 billion is for farmers who lost or damaged livestock. As far as Biden is concerned, the rest of the money should go to repairing infrastructure and supporting affected areas.

Johnson will study the proposal and provide a substantive response at a later date. The US Congress is currently in a transitional phase. Trump will be inaugurated on January 20th. The Democrats lost their majority in the Senate in the elections. And in the new composition of the House, Republicans will hold the majority. It is not yet clear what that means for Mr. Biden’s request.
It has lost a lot of power
Hurricane Helene, which hit the US in September, caused most of the victims. It was the deadliest hurricane since Katrina in 2005. That storm and subsequent flooding killed more than 1,800 people. At the time, the government provided 90 billion dollars in emergency aid to the victims of the natural disaster.
Shortly after Helene, Hurricane Milton hit the US in early October. President Biden had warned in advance that this might be the strongest storm of the century. In the end, the hurricane lost a lot of strength before it made landfall, but many tens of billions in damages were still recorded.
