A 27-year-old Amsterdammer who after an argument at a festival another man stabbed in front of the entrance to the OLVG West was sentenced to three years in prison by the court. The sentence for attempted murder is significantly lower than the five years requested by the Planning Service.
The two clashed last September at the Parels van de Stad festival, near the Riekerhaven. A fight ensues, in which both men are injured. The victim then drives with a friend to OLVG West to receive treatment. The suspect does the same thing, without knowing each other.
Things go wrong again at the hospital entrance. The victim and his friend shout, “Hey, there it is!”, after which the suspect runs towards them and another fight ensues. The suspect stabs the victim with a knife three times in the upper arm and chest, near the heart area. He is seriously injured and shifted to the AMC in critical condition.

According to his lawyer, there was an emergency situation. During the struggle, the victim’s friend kicked the suspect’s arm, causing it to break. “My client acted out of emotional stress and grabbed his knife to stop his attackers,” said his lawyer, who argued for acquittal.
The court does not agree with this. By running towards the couple, the suspect assumed a ‘direct attack and surge’ position and could have expected a counter-reaction. The fact that he broke his hand, according to the court, does not mean that there was an emergency defense, in which someone acts in self-defense.

A difficult childhood

The reason the sentence is lower than the Public Prosecution Service’s request is because the suspect is ‘relatively young’ and has ‘raised his life well despite a difficult childhood’ . He also expressed remorse several times and the victim ‘also participated in the campaigns’.
In addition to the prison sentence, the suspect must pay more than 12,000 euros in compensation to the victim, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
