Pat Riley will be entitled to his statue in front of the Lakers hall

A legendary NBA franchise, the Lakers already have a large number of statues in front of their Downtown Los Angeles arena. But we will have to make room for a new one: that of Pat Riley.

Three weeks ago, Pat Riley gave a speech in Miami during the ceremony accompanying the (failed) statue of Dwyane Wade. Now, he’s the one who’s about to be immortalized.

Immortalized, but not in Miami where he already has a floor in his name. It is in Los Angeles that he will be entitled to the greatest tributes, he who was the coach of the legendary Showtime Lakers in the 1980s, long before taking control of the Miami franchise.

As announced by insider Chris Haynes, then by the Lakers via an official press releasePat Riley will therefore be entitled to his own statue on Star Plaza, just in front of the Crypto.com Arena.

No need to go on forever to justify this choice to honor Patoche. We’re talking about one of the best all-time coaches, who won five championship rings (four as head coach, one as assistant) with the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s, as well as a Coach title of the Year in Los Angeles. Like superstar Magic Johnson, Pat Riley embodied both the success of the Lakers but also the very Hollywood and glamorous image of the Californian franchise. Hair combed back, Armani suits, aviator sunglasses, in short Patoche had to style ! You add to all that a championship title as a player (1972), and you get a “Lakers icon” to use the words of owner Jeanie Buss.

The day on which Pat Riley will be honored by the Lakers is not yet known. But we already know that it will be in 2026, and that Patoche will join Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, Chick Hearn, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jerry West among the immortalized Lakers personalities.
