BRAUNAU. The “Development Cooperation Week” (EZA Week) also drew attention in Braunau and showed how Fairtrade can enrich everyday life and promote global justice. With a varied program of stalls, information offerings and a film evening, the Eine Welt initiative, the Weltladen and the Fairtrade working group in Braunau invited people to engage with the topic of fair trade.
At the weekly market, which takes place every Wednesday, a stand right in front of the town hall attracted particular attention. There, members of the Fairtrade working group and the world shop offered hot tea and coffee, which of course came from fair trade. While passers-by enjoyed the warm drinks, they gained insights into the origin of the products and the conditions under which they are produced. The stand was not only a place for a warming drink, but also for stimulating conversations about the impact of conscious purchasing decisions.
Film evening in the Diesel cinema
On Thursday evening, the film “What Does the Lama Want with the Gun” took around 80 visitors to the Himalayas. With a profound story, the film offered insights into Bhutanese society and questioned whether Western ideas of “development” can always be considered progress. Afterwards, many guests took the opportunity to discuss the film’s messages at the Fairtrade stand.
Fairtrade: A success story in Braunau
Braunau has had the title of “Fairtrade City” since 2017 and was awarded the Fairtrade Award in 2018. A large part of this success is thanks to the efforts of the Eine Welt initiative, which founded the Weltladen in Braunau and has been committed to equitable cooperation with the global south for over 40 years. The world shop, now run under the umbrella of “FAIRein WELTladen Braunau”, is a popular place to go for sustainable and fairly produced products.
