Within the celebration of the III Congress of the Andalusian Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SAMICEI), Nicolás Merchante Gutiérrez has been named its president.
In this way, the director of the Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Unit of the Valme hospital in Seville adds this new responsibility to his appointment from 2022 as coordinator of the comprehensive program for the prevention, control of infections related to healthcare and appropriate use of antimicrobials in the Public Health System of Andalusia.
He has two decades of experience working in the field of infectious diseases, with his main areas of interest, both from a clinical and research point of view: nosocomial infection, infections by multi-resistant germs and PROA activity (Programs for Optimization of use of antimicrobials), with special emphasis on intra-abdominal infection and Clostridioides difficile infection*.
Precisely at the Valme University Hospital he is one of those responsible for coordinating the PROA Team. A team that works on the proper use of antibiotics and the control of bacteria resistant to them.
Likewise, it is the clinical reference in the management of nosocomial infection at this health center, promoting in recent years several activities aimed at improving the care of infections associated with health care at this center. He has also participated in the preparation of consensus documents for scientific societies.
On the scientific side, he has currently coordinated national and international multicenter studies, as well as being a collaborator in national and international clinical trials of infectious pathology. He is a member of study groups of the National and European Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology: SEIMC and ESCMID, respectively.
It should also be noted that, since the onset of the pandemic, it has been actively involved in assistance and research into SARS CoV2 infection.
In fact, as a consequence of this, in 2020 he promoted the constitution of the Clinical Research Group in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology of the Valme University Hospital, of which he is the coordinator. A research career that was previously recognized in 2019 with the award for Young Researchers from the Royal and Illustrious College of Physicians of Seville.
As a teacher, Nicolás Merchante has been a tutor for Resident Internal Physicians in his workplace and has participated as a teacher in numerous training activities in the field of Medicine and biomedical research. Since 2020, he has been an Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine at the University of Seville.
