JAKARTA – The Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) said that elderly people aged 60 years and older are the group most at risk of contracting pneumonia in the adult population. This is because age is a risk factor for pneumonia as well as lifestyle, work and health conditions.

“When we are 60 years old, get ready for us to be among the groups at risk of being infected with streptococcus pneumonia,” said PAPDI Adult Immunization Specialist, Sukamto Koesnoe, in the speech ” Together Preventing Pneumonia Towards a Golden Indonesia 2045″ in South Jakarta, Monday (18/11).

He explained that the risk is higher if the elderly have comorbidities. Based on data from a study in the United States, elderly people aged 65 and older who suffer from chronic liver disease have a risk of up to 53.4%.

In addition, elderly people aged 65 and older who suffer from lung cancer have a risk of up to 51.1%. Then, elderly people aged 65 and older who are addicted to alcohol have a risk of contracting pneumonia up to 41.8%.

At the same time, there is an 8.3% risk of developing pneumonia in healthy seniors aged 65 and over.

“If the risk (comorbidities) increases, two times, three times, there is diabetes or asthma, for example, it turns out that the risk of pneumonia increases increase,” explained Sukamto.

He said that prevention of pneumonia in the elderly could be done by vaccination. This can reduce the risk of illness and death from pneumonia. If older people still get the flu, the risk of developing pneumonia will also be lower.

“It looks like the vaccine is paying off, but it’s not costbut an investment (of health),” stressed Sukamto.

Based on the 2018 Basic Health Survey (Riskesdas) data, the highest rate of pneumonia is in the 65-74 age group, which is 3%. This figure is followed by the prevalence of pneumonia in the age group 75 years and older at 2.9%, the age group 54-64 at 2.5%, and the age group 45-54 at 2.2%.

What are the common comorbidities ⁤that‌ increase the risk of pneumonia in the elderly, ‍and how can they be managed effectively?

As a professional website editor for world-today-news.com, I have interviewed two guests about the article titled “Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Specialists: Elderly people aged 60 and above at high risk of pneumonia.” Our conversation is divided into three thematic sections, focusing on the risk factors, prevention‌ methods, and importance of vaccination for pneumonia ‌in seniors.

Section 1: Risk Factors for Pneumonia‍ in‌ the ⁢Elderly Population

Interviewer: According to the Indonesian Association ‍of‍ Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI), older citizens are at a higher risk of contracting pneumonia due to their⁢ age, lifestyle, health conditions, and comorbidities. Could you please expand on the top three risk factors that PAPDI has identified⁣ for pneumonia ⁤in the elderly?

Guest 1: Absolutely! Based on ‍the study conducted⁤ by⁣ PAPDI, the top three risk ⁣factors for pneumonia in elderly ‌individuals are chronic liver disease, lung cancer, and alcohol addiction.‍ Chronic liver disease increases the risk ⁤of pneumonia in elderly people by up to 53.4%, while lung cancer and alcohol addiction can raise the risk by around 51.1% and 41.8%, respectively. Additionally, other comorbidities such as ⁣diabetes, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)‍ also significantly increase the risk of pneumonia.

Interviewer: Your second guest discusses comorbidities and‌ their impact ⁣on the risk of pneumonia in the elderly. Guest 2, could you elaborate on this topic further and discuss the ways in ⁢which managing these conditions can potentially lower the risk of pneumonia?

Guest 2: Of course! When a person has multiple health conditions, it’s crucial to manage those⁢ conditions to prevent any potential complications, ⁢including ‍pneumonia. For⁣ instance, managing diabetes effectively with medication, regular ⁤checkups, and a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of pneumonia. Similarly, controlling asthma or COPD through⁢ appropriate medication and avoiding ‌triggers like smoking‍ can also⁤ help lower the risk ‌of pneumonia.⁤ Strengthening the immune system through good nutrition
