CAN-2025 (U17): Algeria loses to Egypt
The Algerian under-17 football team (U17) lost against its Egyptian counterpart 1-2 (half-time: 1-0), Thursday in Casablanca, in a match counting for the 2nd day of the Union tournament North African Football (UNAF) , which qualifies for the CAN-2025 African Cup of Nations in the region. The “Greens” opened the scoring shortly before the break, with a penalty converted by Charaf-Eddine Cherfaoui (45th). In the second half, the “Pharaohs” turned the tide, first equalizing with Mohamed Hamad (59th), before taking the advantage a few minutes later through Hamza Elsayed (66th).
After this result, Egypt temporarily joins Tunisia and Morocco at the top of the ranking with 3 points each, while Algeria is in fourth place with 0 points. This is the second defeat for the Algerian cadets, after the one conceded on Monday against Tunisia (1-0). The second obstacle in a series that seriously threatens the chance of qualification. More than ever with their backs against the wall, coach Aziz Lahoussine’s players will need a miracle to qualify for CAN-2025. Captain Mohamed Benhakim’s teammates will not be allowed to make any more mistakes against Libya next Sunday (8:00pm), then against Morocco on Saturday 23 November (6:00pm). The first two at the end of this small competition will represent the UNAF zone at CAN-2025.
Algeria has only two participations in the last stage of the CAN U17, as a host country, in the 2009 and 2023 editions, we remember.

1. World-Today-News: Welcome to our show! Today, we have two special guests with us, Mr. Samir Azizi, president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and Mohamed Benhakim, captain of the Algerian U17 National Football Team. First of all, can you please tell us how do you feel about the team’s performance in the ongoing UNAF tournament?
– Mr. Samir Azizi: Thank you for inviting us on your show. We are indeed very disappointed with the team’s result. They put in a lot of effort and hard work during the preparation stage, but it seems that the team is still struggling to find its rhythm and consistency. We hope that they can bounce back strongly in their next matches.
- Mohamed Benhakim: As the team captain, I share the same sentiment as the president. We have to admit that we did not play our best game against Egypt. However, we still have two more matches left, and we need to put this loss behind us and focus on winning the remaining games. Every member of the team has the determination and will to qualify for the CAN-2025.
2. World-Today-News: Mr. Azizi, what do you think went wrong during the match against Egypt? Can you provide some insights into the preparation the team had before the tournament?
– Mr. Samir Azizi: The team had an intense preparation phase under a new coach. We appointed Mr. Aziz Lahoussine to take the team forward and prepare them for this tournament. However, it seems like we still need more time to gel as a team. The team is facing some challenges in terms of adapting to the coach’s new system and style of play. We hope that they can overcome these issues and perform better in the upcoming matches.
3. World-Today-News: Mohamed, what are the challenges you face as a team captain during such a crucial tournament? How do you manage to keep the team’s morale high after such a defeat?
– Mohamed Benhakim: As a captain, my main responsibility is to lead the team and keep the players motivated even in difficult situations. After the game, I addressed the players and reminded
